Do the Back Seats Fold Doen in a Ford Mustang Convertible
- Standard safety kit improved
- Disappointing Euro NCAP rating
- Two Isofix points in rear seats
Considering this is a relatively new car, the Ford Mustang Fastback achieved a worryingly low two-star rating in 2017, which then increased to three stars after a reassessment.
While the Convertible has not been specifically tested, all facelift models from 2018 will benefit from additional driver assistance technology in attempt to improve performance.
This includes pedestrian detection with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
Isofix points can be found on the rear seats while airbags can be found for driver, passenger, driver's knee and one integrated into the glovebox.
Despite the extra-large exterior proportions, this doesn't quite translate into a generously-proportioned interior for the Mustang Convertible. At the very least there's plenty of space up front and, even though the high transmission tunnel and window-line manages to envelope the driver and passenger, there's still plenty of head and legroom.
Rear headroom also betters the Fastback with the roof up as the canvas roof doesn't slope downwards as steeply. The seats are best reserved for children and teenagers however, due to limited legroom and the outer bolstering awkwardly pushing the shoulder out.
Up front, the centre console houses a double cupholder large enough for a couple of standard drinks cans, while a glovebox, door pockets and cubby hole under the armrest in the central console feature elsewhere.
Rear-seat passengers on the other hand will have minimal storage space – with only the front seat map pockets available. While headroom betters the Fastback, there is sparse equipment and the lack of adjustable head restraints will limit the size of passengers wanting to spend much time here.
This might be one area where you view the Mustang Convertible giving you more for your money. Compared to its immediate rivals, the Mustang is slightly longer than all of them – for example, 116mm over an Audi A5 - so it might be worth checking the dimensions of your garage or driveway before purchase.
Rear parking sensors are standard on all models, as is a rear-view camera, but automatic parking will not be available at all.
At 332 litres, luggage space can't quite match up to its rivals, offering less than the BMW 4 Series Convertible, the Audi A5 Cabriolet and Mercedes C-Class. However, unlike the BMW and Audi, boot space is unaffected with the roof downas it folds away in a separate section behind the rear seats.
The good news is, the boot is well-shaped, square and avoids too many intrusions or odd shapes to contend with. If you opt for the Shaker sound system, the right-hand side compartment will be taken up by a subwoofer. The bad news however, is the lack of folding rear seats compared with its three main rivals.
